Inspired by the call of Pope Francis for us to “put on the face of mercy” during the Holy Year, we offer visitors the opportunity to experience the awesome power and reach of God’s forgiveness through worship, service and the expression of art. The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral invites all people to visit and learn how to become “Pilgrims of Mercy” by then journeying to the nearby Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where they will pass through Holy Doors. There, empowered by indulgences and blessings, the pilgrim is to reflect upon a display of presepio: The Holy Family surrounded by other hand-crafted Neapolitan figures figurines depicting the sinful but redeemed condition of humanity in today’s world. Brought to one’s knees in adoration of Mercy Made Flesh, we rise to take upon the task of being merciful to ourselves and others.
